Limpach is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Limpach is first mentioned in 1276.[3]

Geography

Limpach, Switzerland has an area, as of 2009, of 4.45 km2 (1.72 sq mi). Of this area, 3.13 km2 (1.21 sq mi) or 70.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.97 km2 (0.37 sq mi) or 21.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.33 km2 (0.13 sq mi) or 7.4% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes.[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.6%. 21.6% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 63.4% is used for growing crops and 5.6% is pastures, while 1.3% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]

Limpach is located in the Limpach valley on the border of the Canton of Solothurn. The parish church of Limpach also serves Büren zum Hof and Schalunen.

Demographics

Limpach has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 340.[1] As of 2007, 4.4% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -0.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (99.7%), with Albanian being second most common ( 0.3%) and noe being third (noew%).

In the election the most popular party was the SVP which received 66.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (7.3%), the Green Party (7%) and the local small left-wing parties (5.4%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 28.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 53.2% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.7%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Limpach about 80.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Limpach has an unemployment rate of 1.17%. As of 2005, there were 61 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 18 businesses involved in this sector. 32 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 20 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 8 businesses in this sector.[5]
